This delicious frozen coconut lime margarita recipe made with 1800 Tequila – or really any of your favorite tequila – is the perfect cocktail for a warm summer day and a good choice if you’re looking for a way to switch up your traditional margarita.
Before I give away the recipe for this ultimate summer cocktail, I figured I would share 5 fun facts about tequila. I love learning about wine so why not learn a little about tequila?! I promise the frozen coconut margarita will follow shortly (or you can head to my reel linked here to see the easy cocktail recipe in action).
5 Fun Facts About Tequila
- It takes 8-12 years for the Blue Agave plant to mature enough to make Tequila. Tequila is made from the heart of the Blue Agave plant, called piña. This can weigh up to 200 pounds when harvested!!
- The agave plant is not a cactus. Despite its spiky appearance, agave actually belongs to the Agavoideae family, which is a succulent closely related to the lily plant. In Latin, agave means illustrious, admirable, and noble.
- All tequila is mezcal but not all mezcal is tequila. Tequila can only be made from the blue agave, but mezcal can be made from over 30 varieties of agave.
- The best type of tequila is 100% agave. Here are some premium tequila brands to look out for that are made with 100% blue agave:
- Casamigos Blanco [$41.99] – Crisp and clear, with subtle hints of vanilla and a smooth finish. It has been distilled in copper-lined stills, then filtered, and aged two months in stainless steel containers.
- Espolon Blanco [$23.99] – Created in the famed hills of Los Altos, this Blanco tequila is double distilled using column and pot stills to give it a perfectly smooth and balanced taste profile. This is a great price point and comes in a fun bottle.
- Patron Silver [$27.49] – Crystal clear, pure ultra premium. Light, fresh tequila is a favorite worldwide. Smooth, soft, light tequila.
- 1800 Coconut Tequila [$37.99] – 100% Blue Agave tequila triple distilled and infused with fresh coconut water. Aromas of classic tequila with a hint of coconut. Smooth and silky texture with a nice balance of natural slightly sweet coconut flavor. UMM yes – going to need to use this in the recipe next time.
- The three main categories of Tequila are:
- Tequila Blanco – Un-aged and bottled within two months of distillation.
- Reposado Tequila – Aged between two-twelve months in barrels.
- Anejo – Aged between 1-3 years in small oak barrels.
How To Make A Frozen Coconut Margarita
This is a fun twist on the classic margarita. Gives me tropical vacation pina colada vibes, but here you can make it at home for less than your vacation drink price of $18.99. It’s one of my favorite margaritas to make (alongside the spicy margarita) with just the right amount of sweetness. See below for everything you need to make this island-inspired coconut margarita.
Ingredients For Two Frozen Coconut Margaritas
- 3 oz tequila blanco
- 3 limes (or about 1/4 cup of fresh-squeezed lime juice)
- 1/2 cup coconut milk (I used reduced fat)
- 2 cups fresh ice
- 1 Tablespoon Agave Syrup (I prefer this over simple syrup)
- Lime slice for a garnish
- Sugar for the rim (I used sugar in the raw)
Directions
This is very simple. If you don’t have a blender then you could mix it in a cocktail shaker it and pour it over ice, it will be just as delicious as the frozen drink.
- Zest one half of a lime and mix it with a little bit of sugar on a small plate.
- Rim the glasses with the lime and dip in the sugar/lime zest mixture. Tip – I find this works much better with actual glassware compared to plastic or melamine cups. The sugar will actually stay on the rim of the glass.
- Fill up blender (I used the NutriBullet) with 2 cups of ice cubes, 3 oz tequila, 1/2 cup coconut milk, juice of 2 limes and 1 tablespoon agave nectar.
- Blend until desired consistency, pour into a cocktail glass or rocks glass and garnish with a lime wedge or lime wheel.
- Get the party started with the perfect drink.
How Is This Different Than A Traditional Margarita?
The classic way to make a margarita is with tequila, triple sec, and fresh lime juice. If you don’t prefer the taste of triple sec or you are looking to upgrade to a good quality orange liqueur you can swap it for Grand Marnier or Cointreau. I also like to add a splash of citrus juice (either fresh pineapple juice or orange juice) to my margaritas.
Making them fresh and with simple ingredients is always a better choice over using a margarita mix that you can find at liquor stores. This way you can choose premium ingredients and fresh juice over the sour mix that’s usually in the drink mixes. I like to add a salt rim but that’s personal preference. There’s so many ways you can customize this delicious cocktail.
I hope you loved this frozen coconut margarita recipe, this tropical twist on a classic cocktail is perfect for entertaining. One of my favorite things about spring and summer is all the entertaining we get to do at the pool. Your guests will love the tropical flavor and I’m willing to bet it will be the star of the show at your next Taco Tuesday or special occasion.
If you’re not a fan of tequila drinks (then you mostly likely wouldn’t have read this far 🤣) but you could swap out the tequila for coconut rum.
