Pregnancy is an exciting time filled with joy and anticipation, but it also brings many questions and concerns about what is safe for both the mother and the developing baby. As a mom of three, I’ve been here many times before. At the sight of that first positive pregnancy test, you may start wondering what beauty treatments are safe.
Once you become pregnant, you not only have to worry about prioritizing your own health, but also the health of your child. At the same time, as that pregnant bump grows you still want to treat yourself to getting your hair, nails or brows done to feel good. Good news is, you can still take part in these things but let’s explore the safety, potential risks, and precautions associated with eyebrow tinting while expecting.

Understanding Eyebrow Tinting
Eyebrow tinting is a cosmetic procedure that involves applying a semi-permanent dye to enhance the color, shape, and thickness of the eyebrows. The process usually takes about 15-20 minutes and can last anywhere from three to six weeks, depending on the type of dye used and individual hair growth rates. Many women opt for eyebrow tinting to achieve a more defined look without the daily need for makeup. Eyelash tinting is a very similar procedure which gives the same type of results and both procedures are typically done by a lash technician at a salon. Eyebrow tinting is not the same as microblading, combo brows, or powder brows. These are not recommended during pregnancy.
Safety Concerns During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, the body undergoes numerous changes, including fluctuating hormone levels that can affect skin sensitivity and overall health. Good news is that eyebrow tinting is safe but you may want to look into some of the following health concerns.
1. Skin Sensitivity
Pregnancy hormones can make the skin more sensitive and prone to reactions. Hormonal changes may lead to increased skin sensitivity, making it more likely for pregnant women to experience irritation or allergic reactions from products that they previously tolerated well. This heightened sensitivity can cause redness, itching, or swelling in the eyebrow area after tinting.
2. Chemical Exposure
Eyebrow tinting involves the use of chemical dyes, which can be a cause for concern. Some eyebrow tints contain ingredients like para-phenylenediamine (PPD), which is a common allergen and can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Additionally, there is limited research on the effects of these chemicals on pregnant women and their developing babies. The same concern would go for hair dye or hair color. There are some dye options that are made from semi-permanent vegetable dyes. Henna brows are another option, which uses a natural dye made from the henna plant.
3. Inhalation of Fumes
The application of eyebrow tint involves the release of fumes, which can be inhaled during the procedure. Pregnant women may be more sensitive to these fumes, potentially causing nausea, dizziness, or respiratory irritation. Prolonged exposure to chemical fumes in poorly ventilated spaces can pose risks to both the mother and the unborn baby. I will say, during early pregnancy being in the nail salon sometimes made me nauseous so maybe try an at home DIY manicure if you’re experiencing any morning sickness, or all day sickness.
4. Infection Risk
Pregnancy can suppress the immune system, making women more susceptible to infections. Any breaks in the skin caused by allergic reactions or improper application of the dye can increase the risk of infection. Ensuring that the procedure is done in a clean, reputable salon with strict hygiene standards is crucial.
Precautions to Take
If you decide to proceed with eyebrow tinting during pregnancy, it’s important to take certain precautions to minimize risks:
1. Choose Safe Products
Opt for eyebrow tints that are free from harsh chemicals such as PPD, ammonia, and resorcinol. Look for a tint with natural ingredients, made from plant-based dyes or those specifically formulated for sensitive skin. Organic and hypoallergenic products are preferable to reduce the risk of irritation and allergic reactions.
2. Inform Your Technician
Make sure to inform your beautician or technician that you are pregnant. A skilled and experienced technician will be aware of the additional necessary precautions to take during pregnancy and can use gentler products or techniques to minimize any potential risks.
3. Ensure Good Ventilation
Choose a well-ventilated salon or spa for the procedure to reduce the inhalation of any fumes. Proper ventilation helps disperse chemical fumes, making it safer for pregnant women.
4. Hygiene and Cleanliness
Ensure that the salon maintains high standards of hygiene and cleanliness. Tools and equipment should be sterilized, and disposable applicators should be used whenever possible to prevent any risk of infection.
5. Consider Alternatives
If you have any concerns about the safety of brow treatments during pregnancy and would like to air on the side of caution, you could consider alternative methods to enhance your eyebrows. Using eyebrow pencils, powders, or brow gel can help achieve a similar effect without the use of chemical dyes.

Expert Opinions
While there is limited research specifically on the safety of eyebrow tinting during pregnancy, many healthcare professionals advise caution. According to the American Pregnancy Association, it’s generally best to avoid exposure to unnecessary chemicals during pregnancy. However, they acknowledge that occasional and limited exposure is unlikely to cause harm. So if you want to go ahead and get some fresh brows before your maternity photoshoot, it’s most likely safe to do so.
Dermatologists and obstetricians often recommend waiting until after the first trimester before considering any cosmetic procedures involving chemicals. The first trimester of pregnancy is a critical period for fetal development. You may feel so tired that you don’t want to leave the house until you’re well into your second trimester. If you are in doubt, it’s always best to consult your healthcare provider before undergoing any cosmetic treatments during pregnancy.
Personal Experience and Testimonials
Many women have shared their experiences with eyebrow tinting during pregnancy, with mixed reviews. Some have reported no adverse reactions and continued their regular beauty routines without any issues. Others have experienced heightened sensitivity and opted to avoid the procedure until after pregnancy.
Reading testimonials and reviews from other pregnant women can provide valuable insights, but it’s important to remember that individual reactions can vary. What works for one person may not work for another, so it’s essential to make an informed decision based on your unique circumstances.
My personal experience with eye brow tinting is very limited. I went once for an eyebrow lamination (not during pregnancy), and they did a tint. But I have had my hair dyed and highlighted many times during pregnancy without any issues.
