Building a boys capsule wardrobe might sound fancy, but trust me — it’s just a simple way to make school mornings easier, laundry lighter, and back to school shopping smarter. This year I put together a fall capsule wardrobe for my 9-year-old son (he’s heading into fourth grade!) and I had so much fun doing it that I had to share.

What’s in Our Boys Fall Capsule Wardrobe (26 Pieces Total)

A quick note before we get into it: almost everything in this capsule comes in big boys sizes, roughly 5/6 all the way up to 12/14 (some brands go to 14/16). So whether you’re shopping for a kindergartener or a kid who’s about to be taller than you, this same list works. Everything I bought is a size 8 or 10 for my 9-year-old.

Tops

The layering pieces are the whole engine of a fall capsule wardrobe — this is where most of the outfit combinations come from.

• 5 short-sleeve t-shirts (neutrals + a couple graphic tees)

This is the part that takes the capsule from fall to winter without buying a whole second wardrobe in December.

• 1–3 pairs of sneakers — I included 3 that you can mix and match because I love boys shoes, but ideally any of these back to school outfits could be worn with one pair. I do think investing in good brands makes the shoes last. The Vans here are under $40 though! Such a great price.

The Color Palette (aka Why Everything Matches)

The color palette for this boys capsule wardrobe is basically cream, navy, grey, and denim with a few pops of accent colors for fun. Almost everything coordinates in one way or another, so I don’t have to help with getting dressed each day and our drawers are not overflowing with options.

Where to Shop for Boys School Clothes

• Old Navy / Gap → best for basics, joggers, jeans, and everyday tees
• H&M → trendy pieces, fun prints, and affordable layering basics
• Cotton On Kids → really cute graphic sweatshirts and they run great sales
• Nike / Adidas / DSW (outlet or on sale) → sneakers that last + name-brand deals
• Abercrombie Kids / Quince → they have some really awesome sales on jeans! $35, which is close to what you’re paying at Old Navy, so I would give these a try.

Pro Tips for Building a Boys Capsule Wardrobe

1. Stick to a color scheme so everything matches. This is the single thing that makes a kids capsule wardrobe work.
2. Buy what they’ll actually wear — skip the “cute but itchy” pieces. My son isn’t a fan of button downs or collared shirts, but if that’s your kid’s style then add that in! As I mentioned, he doesn’t love jeans but I still included them — just make sure you get the stretchy kind.
3. Think layers for the fall to winter transition. One thing that is so hard about living in the northeast is that it’s cold in the morning (50s) and then almost 80 in the afternoon!
4. Aim for easy everyday outfits they can rotate. Pretty much everything here can mix and match. If you REALLY wanted to go overboard on the organization, you could print out each outfit combo and plan out the week. I might try this and see what my son does 🤣. My husband might fall over if I actually execute on this because I am the farthest thing from a type A mom.

What if I’m on a budget? What’s the minimum I should buy? You do not need all 26 pieces. If I were starting over with the smallest possible budget, I’d buy 15 and add from there:

• 3 long-sleeve tees
• 3 short-sleeve tees
• 1 hoodie + 1 crew neck sweatshirt
• 2 pairs of joggers (this is the one place I’d double up — they get worn constantly)
• 1 pair of jeans
• 1 pair of sweat shorts
• 1 winter coat
• 1 fleece or puffer vest
• 1 pair of sneakers

That’s a full week of school outfits with everything still mixing and matching. Pick your favorites and go from there.

What size should I buy? I size up on sweatshirts and coats so they last through winter, and buy jeans and joggers true to size or one size down because my son is on the smaller side.

How do you make a fall capsule wardrobe work into winter? Layers. The long-sleeve tees, fleece, and puffer vest are the pieces doing that work — a t-shirt outfit in September becomes a t-shirt + hoodie + vest outfit in November without buying anything new.
